The Saponi chief told Lawson that the three tribes were planning to join and move again. In 1714 the Saponi, Occaneechi, Tutelo, and other small tribes concluded a treaty with Virginia governor Alexander Spotswood to return to that colony and settle on a six-mile-square reservation laid out on the Meherrin River. Saponi, is the name of one of the eastern Siouan-language tribes related to the Tutelo, Occaneechi, Monacan, Manahoac and other eastern Siouan peoples, whose ancestral homeland is in North Carolina and Virginia.

Apr 13, 2008 · Among the different Nations represented were the Occaneechi, the Stuckanok, the Tottero, and the Saponi. At the invitation of Governor Spottswood of Virginia, these Indians settled a four-square-mile reservation encompassing the north and south side of the Meherrin River. This early pioneer migration route from Virginia to North Carolina is about 100 miles in length. It is part of the Occaneechi Path from Petersburg to the Meherrin River. It then travels east of the Occaneechi Path until it reconnects to the Occaneechi Path where intersects the Tar River in Granville County, NC.
Additional languages mentioned in historical accounts have been posited as Siouan, among them Moneton or Moniton, Nahyssan, and Occaneechi, said to be mutually intelligible with Tutelo and Saponi, but they are not attested. Occaneechi may have been a pidgin used as a lingua franca. In later years, most of these Occaneechi who are sometimes known as Saponi, moved north to Pennsylvania after the Iroquois had made a treaty.
